Crowns and Bridges

A crown is a lab-created “cap” that serves as a stable covering for a tooth. It fits over a tooth or dental implant. Crowns restore a tooth’s strength, function and appearance. Basically, a crown becomes a new outer layer for a tooth. Crowns are used for several reasons. Following a root canal procedure, crowns are used to protect the remaining tooth and provide function. They are used to cover a tooth that has large fillings, if the tooth structure has weakened. A bridge entails two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth with artificial teeth between, in order to fill in a gap created by missing teeth. A crown may be used with an implant to replace a lost tooth. Crowns can protect teeth with cracks and cover teeth that are discolored, chipped or poorly shaped. Crowns are created in a lab based on molds of teeth and gums. They are fabricated of various materials, depending of the strength requirement and desired appearance. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, such as gold, or a combination of materials.

Dental Implants

Unlike bridges, dental implants need no supporting, adjacent teeth. A dental implant is an artificial tooth implanted into the jawbone. It is generally made of titanium and covered with a porcelain crown or bridge to give the appearance of a real tooth. Implants are very durable and will last for many years. Dental implants can restore smiles, even when natural teeth are lost. The success rate for implants is a remarkable 98% for the lower and 91% for the upper. Many people who consider implants have removable, conventional dentures. These patients experience a significant improvement on their ability to chew food comfortably afterwards.

Bondings

Bonding is a relatively simple, mercury-free, solution for repairing discolored, cracked or chipped teeth. It can also be used to fill in gaps between teeth. With bonding, a resin composite is applied to a tooth, then smoothed into the appropriate shape, color and texture.

Veneers

Dental veneers, or laminates, are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored material designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. These shells are bonded to the teeth and can change color, size, shape or length. Veneers can hide stains and chips and can correct misalignments, as well. Veneers can create a straight, white beautiful smile in weeks.
